NFF (CWB) Cleanroom Safety Guidelines
For safety reasons, all NFF (CWB) users are required to observe the following guidelines:
- Familiarize yourself with the location of fire fighting equipment, first aid kit, safety shower and eye washer, emergency alarm button, fire escape routes, safety equipment and assembly point.
- Obtain proper training before operating a machine. Consult NFF (CWB) staff if needed.
- Familiarize yourself with the chemicals before attempting to use them. Always refer to the MSDS for information on the physical, chemical, and toxicological properties of the chemicals.
- Plan your operation or experiment carefully. Bear in mind the hazardous properties of the materials involved.
- Learn how to use fire fighting equipment.
- Keep all fire doors closed.
- Never run.
- Beware of openings of the raise floor.
- Do not panic when an alarm goes off. Check where the alarm comes from.
- Do not temper with any gas boxes location onto the floor.
- Use appropriate personal protective equipment.
- Don't wait until an emergency occurs. Familiarize yourself with all emergency procedures prior to working in the laboratory.
- Know where to find the emergency contact point (hint: the information is placed beside all telephones in the laboratory).
- The buddy system should be applied when working in the laboratory, especially in a hazardous environment. Never work alone even for a minute.
- Check every operation before and after it is performed.
- Do not wear jewelry when operating the equipment as it can become trapped in the moving parts and cause severe injuries.
- Your clean room attire protects the equipment, not you.
- Be extra cautious around electrical equipment when wearing a bunny suit, as perspiration on your skin will lower your electrical resistance to current.
- Exercise extra caution when moving about the clean room while wearing a cleanroom garment, safety glasses, or goggles as your peripheral vision is drastically reduced.
- Allow yourself extra room around mechanical equipment as the loose fabric of your clean room attire can easily become entangled in it.
- Clean room gloves impair your manual dexterity and your sense of touch. By the time your hand senses the heat, your glove may already have melted.
- The protective hood or face shield covers your nose so your sense of smell is reduced.
- The bunny suit desensitizes all of your body so you are less likely to be aware of brushing against objects.
- Clean room booties worn over shoes are slippery and they get more slippery with use.
